Symposium

The Dutch Foundation for Peace Studies (SVW) is organizing its annual symposium on Thursday, April 3, 2025, 3.30pm – 5.30pm, in the Aurora Room of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, in cooperation with the VU Center for Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) and the NWO-sponsored project ‘Armed Forces and Society’.

This year’s symposium will look at the perceptions and attitudes of the public on the military and on defense policy in the Netherlands and Europe in turbulent times.
The position and role of the military in liberal-democratic “Western” societies has been changing dramatically in recent years. The withdrawal from Afghanistan symbolizes the end of an era of interventionism, the Russian invasion of Ukraine marks the end of the widely held assumption that major wars no longer occur in Europe. The Netherlands and its partners are investing in their armed forces accordingly. The symposium will discuss the ramifications of these developments for society and its perception of the military and defense policy. Panelists in this discussion will be Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wagner of VU – PACS, Dr. Aine Romanaite, Dr. Ir. Martijntje Smits and Dr. Jeannine Suurmond.

This will be followed by a discussion on the orientation of peace and conflict studies. It seems that the embrace of security goes hand in hand with the decline in attention to peace studies, a stronger focus on conflict than on peace. What is the future of peace studies and research into positive peace? – a discussion with young academics and the audience.

In 2022 vond op 8 april het symposium “Impact of Peace Research in Practice” plaats in samenwerking met Slot Loevestein.

Het symposium van 2020, “Peace Studies in the Netherlands: The State of the Art“, werd in samenwerking met het Institute or Security and Global Affairs aan de Universiteit Leiden georaganiseerd op 21 december.

Het symposium van 2019, “War/truth: A seminar on investigating civilian harm in the Syria/Iraq wars“, werd in samenwerking met de Universiteit Utrecht and CS Ubuntu (Study Association for Conflict Studies and Human Rights) georganiseerd op 6 december 2019.

Het symposium van 2018, “Peace and Conflict Business: A Peace and Conflict Studies Perspective on Corporations and Human Rights“, vond plaats op dinsdag 11 december aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam.

Het symposium van 2017, “Syria’s Seven Years of Tragedy: Peace and Conflict Studies in Times of Global Challenges“, werd georganiseerd in samenwerking met de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam en het IOVIS Centre for Peace en Conflict op vrijdag 15 december. Een interdisciplinair panel bestaande uit Marit Sijbrandij (psychologie), Srdjan Sremac (religiewetenschappen), Wouter Werner (rechten) en Ruud Welten (filosofie), onder leiding van Wolfgang Wagner (politicologie), sprak over de situatie in Syrië en de relevantie van wetenschappelijk onderzoek en -onderwijs in tijden van hardnekkige politieke instabiliteit en gewapende conflicten. Een Engelstalig verslag van de Visions on Peace uitreiking tijdens het symposium is hier te vinden.

In 2016 vond het symposium plaats op vrijdag 9 december aan de Haagse Hogeschool. Hugh Pope van International Crisis Group sprak over de politieke situatie in Turkije en het gebruik van diplomatie door de internationale gemeenschap. De (Engelstalige) presentatie is te vinden op de website van ICG. Ook in 2015 vond het symposium plaats aan de Haagse Hogeschool.

Het symposium van 2014, ‘Past, Present & Future of Peace Research’ werd georganiseerd in samenwerking met Universiteit Groningen op 11 en 12 december. Keynote sprekers waren Nico Schrijver en Johan Galtung. Gedurende twee dagen vonden panels plaats met verschillende generaties vredesonderzoekers.

Het symposium van 2013 vond plaats op 4 december aan de Vrije Universiteit met als thema burgerbescherming in Syrië en het dilemma van (non)interventie in complexe conflicten. Voor meer informatie zie verslag symposium 2013.
